Nritya — Sanskrit for dance, the embodiment of movement, expression, and storytelling.
Duende — A Spanish concept describing the mystical power of art to move the soul, that rare
moment when performer and audience are seized by something beyond technique.
About Flamenco
Flamenco is an emotive art form from Southern Spain, born in the Andalusian region, that combines singing (cante), dancing (baile), and guitar playing (toque). Known for its passionate intensity, complex rhythms, and deep emotional expression, Flamenco is characterized by its distinctive guitar techniques, intricate footwork, and the raw, visceral power it evokes in both performer and audience. The Flamenco guitar, with its percussive strumming patterns and melodic flourishes, creates a rich tapestry of sound that drives the emotional narrative of the
performance.
The Guitarist: Sanjeev Shri
At the heart of NRITYA DUENDE is Sanjeev Shri, a professional Flamenco guitarist based in Bhopal, who brings authentic Spanish Flamenco to Indian stages. Trained in the traditional methods of Sevilla, Spain — the birthplace of Flamenco — Sanjeev has mastered the intricate techniques and emotional depth of this demanding art form.
As the founder of “Baithak – The Art House”, an alternative performance space in Bhopal dedicated to fostering artistic collaboration, Sanjeev has pioneered the concept of jugalbandi (musical duet) between Spanish Flamenco and Indian classical traditions. His guitar doesn’t just accompany the dance — it converses with it, creating moments of spontaneous beauty where the strings respond to the dancer’s movements and the rhythm of her feet echoes in his music.
Sanjeev’s expertise in Flamenco guitar provides the perfect foundation for Bharatanatyam’s complex rhythmic patterns, as both art forms share a deep reverence for precision, emotion, and
the power of improvisation within structure.
The Collaboration
NRITYA DUENDE brings together two extraordinary artists:
Apeksha Niranjan — Renowned Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer, celebrated for her expressive mastery and innovative vision in classical Indian dance.
Sanjeev Shri — A professional Flamenco guitarist based in Bhopal, trained in the authentic traditions of Sevilla, Spain. His expertise in this emotive art form from Southern Spain brings the passionate soul of Flamenco guitar to Indian classical dance. As the founder of “Baithak – The Art House,” an alternative performance space in Bhopal that fosters artistic collaboration, Sanjeev has dedicated his artistry to creating unique fusion experiences. His collaboration with Indian classical artists, particularly in jugalbandi (duet) formats, creates a seamless bridge
between Spanish Flamenco and Indian classical traditions.
Supported by a team of 4-6 talented musicians, this collaboration transforms the stage into a
space where two great classical traditions meet, converse, and harmonize.

- Classical Indian dance vocabulary speaks through Spanish musical phrases
- Abhinaya (expression) merges with the raw emotion of Flamenco
- Two ancient art forms create something entirely new while honoring their roots
