Nayanam

Where the Eyes Speak Louder Than Words

“The eyes are the mirror of the soul. When they dance, the universe awakens.”

In the classical tradition of Bharatanatyam, there is a truth so ancient it predates language—that the entire cosmos can be expressed through the eyes alone. NAYANAM, derived from the Sanskrit word for ‘the eyes,’ is the singular artistic vision of Apeksha Niranjan, celebrated as the Queen of Expressions. This is not merely a performance; it is a revelation.

A single glance holds devotion. A flutter of lashes captures longing. The stillness of a gaze carries the weight of the universe. Through NAYANAM, Apeksha leads audiences on an extraordinary journey where Bharatanatyam’s complete repertoire unfolds through the language of nayan—proving that dance is not just what the body does, but what the soul sees and the eyes reveal.

Since its premiere in Navi Mumbai in 2018, NAYANAM has crossed continents—moving audiences in South Korea, France, and Poland, and earning landmark critical acclaim at New Delhi’s prestigious Stein Auditorium at India Habitat Centre (June 2024). A girl in the Polish audience was moved to tears; a dance critic called the performance ‘a feast for the eyes.’ No translation was needed. None ever is.

The Repertoire

NAYANAM unfolds as a complete margam, each piece a window into a different emotional universe through the eyes:
  • Alarippu — Invoking the trinayan Shambho (Shiva with three eyes), jagat janani Meenakshi (the fish-eyed goddess), and kamal nayan Padmanabha.
  • Varnam — Based on Soundarya Lahari, portraying the spectrum of Parvati’s eyes as she gazes upon Shiva—love, anger, fear, and compassion in a single composition.
  • Vatsalya Padam — A mother searching for her child: pure, wordless love made visible.
  • Surdas Pad (‘Ankhiyaan Hari Darshan ki Pyasi’) — The inner vision of the blind poet-saint Surdas, who saw his beloved Krishna through the eyes of the soul.
  • Polish Folk Music Piece — A cross-cultural gem: the story of a young girl awaiting her lover, bridging two worlds through the universal grammar of longing.
  • Tillana — In raga Yaman, the dancer’s eyes reflect the mudit (joyous) and chakit (awestruck) gaze of the Divine.
