Buddha The Awakened One

A Spiritual Journey from Prince to Enlightenment

“In the stillness beneath the Bodhi Tree, a prince became the light of the world.”

What does it cost to renounce the world? BUDDHA: The Awakened One does not simply narrate the life of Siddhartha Gautama — it lives inside it. In this profound 45-minute solo Bharatanatyam presentation, Apeksha Niranjan traces the remarkable transformation of a sheltered prince into the Enlightened One, weaving the ancient art of Bharatanatyam with the timeless teachings of compassion, truth, and non-violence at the heart of Buddhist philosophy.

The performance unfolds as a moving meditation — from Siddhartha’s royal existence and his first encounters with suffering, through years of austere practice, to his ultimate awakening beneath the Bodhi Tree. But what makes this production uniquely human is its intimate portrayal of relationships: the anguish of Yashodhara, who gave birth to their son Rahul on the very night Siddhartha renounced the palace; the desperate love of King Shuddhodhan, who tried with all his heart to convince his son to remain. This is the story of a father and son, a husband and wife — and the irreversible moment when a soul chooses the path of all souls.

With evocative abhinaya (expressive storytelling) and intricate nritta (pure dance), Apeksha brings the Buddha’s Middle Path to life — not as a historical lesson, but as a living invitation to reflect on existence, suffering, and liberation.

world premiere: south korea, 2024

Buddha: The Awakened One made its international debut at the Buddhism International Dance Festival in Seoul, South Korea — a prestigious gathering of artists from across the globe united by a single theme: the Buddha. The music was specially composed by Apeksha and her team for this production. For Korean audiences, whose own culture is deeply shaped by Buddhist tradition, the performance resonated with extraordinary depth — a shared spiritual language expressed through the universal vocabulary of classical Indian dance.
