Sangam

A Confluence of Classical Traditions — Bharatanatyam Meets Polish Kathak

“Sangam — confluence. Where two rivers meet, the water is richer than either alone.”

Kathak, born in the courts of North India, travelled along the Silk Road and took root in Poland — where a living tradition of Polish Kathak dance exists to this day, nurtured by dancers who have made this art form their own. SANGAM brings together two classical worlds: Apeksha Niranjan’s Bharatanatyam and the Polish Kathak of Magdalena Niernsee — in a collaborative solo performance that celebrates the shared DNA of Indian classical dance across two very different cultures.

The word Sangam means confluence — the point where two rivers meet and flow as one. In this production, Bharatanatyam’s sculptural precision and devotional depth meets the graceful, lyrical quality of Kathak as interpreted by a Polish artist who has devoted her life to its mastery. The result is a performance that asks a simple but profound question: what happens when the same tradition, filtered through two different cultures and two different bodies, meets on the same stage?

The answer, audiences across Poland have discovered, is magic. SANGAM premiered in Poland in 2022 and has since been performed across multiple cities, demonstrating that classical Indian dance forms carry a vitality that transcends geography — and that art, in the hands of dedicated artists from any background, is always at home.
